Most people aren’t saving enough for when they retire. There are lots of reasons for this. In the past, not every company offered their employees a pension scheme. Those companies that did offer a scheme didn’t always make a payment to their employees’ pensions – in other words, they didn’t add any extra money to the amount their employees had saved themselves. Even when employees could get a pension scheme that their employer paid in to, they didn’t always join. Lots of people put it off, thinking they’d get round to it later. Some people got the forms but never filled them in, because it looked like too much hard work.

To help people get more money when they retire, every employer has to offer its employees a pension scheme that meets the minimum standards the Government has set. Every employer has to pay in extra money on top of the money its employees save. And every employer has to add some of its employees to the scheme automatically, depending on how old they are and how much they earn. This is to make it as easy as possible for anyone who wants to have a pension to start saving. Anyone who doesn’t want to have a pension yet can opt out. It’s your choice – you’re always in control.

The minimum amount of your pay that must be paid into a pension is 5% of everything you earn between £520 and £4,189. Whitbread pays in 3%. Anyone who doesn’t want a pension can still opt out – you’re always in control.
